Fever - the immune system’s natural tool
🔥 Have you ever wondered why the body raises its temperature during infection? Fever might seem to be only an unpleasant symptom, but in fact, it is one of the major defence strategies of the immune system.
When microbes invade, the body releases special signalling molecules (cytokines) that reset the “thermostat” in the brain. A higher temperature creates a less favourable environment for many bacteria and viruses, slowing their growth. At the same time, fever increases the activity of white blood cells - our immune guardians, helping them act faster and more effectively against intruders.
Although fever can feel exhausting, in most cases it means that the immune system is actively fighting to restore balance. That’s why mild to moderate fever is often described as a helpful ally in recovery — a sign that the body is working hard on your behalf.
⚠️ Note: While fever is a natural defence mechanism, very high or prolonged fever can be dangerous, especially in children, elderly people, or individuals with chronic conditions. So always consult a doctor if you are concerned about a fever, i.e. if it reaches high levels.
